Gold Dust® - Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Goduzam’
A KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLORS
Fall. Just the word brings to mind so many wonderful thoughts and smells; crisp, cooler air; football and marching bands; hot cider and homemade apple pie; and perhaps most of all, images of plants turning various, brightly colored shades of red, orange, burgundy and gold. Believe it or not you can find this kaleidoscope of colors all at one time on just one single tree. Sound interesting? Then let me introduce you to one of Mother Nature’s best kept secrets, Gold Dust® sweet gum.
Before we even talk about color, you’ve got to know that Gold Dust® is proven more winter hardy than all other Liquidambar cultivars. It was the only sweet gum to survive the devastating freeze of 1977 and 1978 in Northeast Ohio. It forms a well proportioned crown and calipers heavy at a young age which is probably a contributing factor to its survival strength.
Gold Dust® has star-shaped foliage. In spring it is a light green which darkens as it matures. By late June it adds a distinct yellow-gold mottling which intensifies weekly through the summer until autumn when it takes on additional shades of pink, red, orange and burgundy.
Another unique feature of this shade tree is its’ bark. Unlike the species, it has a smooth, silvery-gray bark and an unfurrowed trunk, giving it nice winter interest.
Hardy to U.S.D.A. Zone 5, Gold Dust® is one of the only shade trees which can truly provide 4 seasons of beauty. It can take partial shade but it should have full sun for the best color. It prefers a soil pH of 5.5 to 7.0.
